The Other Side

“The Other Side of the Hero” – A Collaborative Event by Edmonton Metro EMS and Legacy Place Society

Join us for the screening of the powerful documentary “The Other Side of the Hero” at the Garneau Theater (Metro Cinema) in Edmonton on January 31, 2018. This event is brought to you through the collaborative efforts of Edmonton Metro Emergency Medical Services and Legacy Place Society.

About the Other Side of the Hero:

The Other Side of the Hero offers an intimate look into the personal lives of first responders. It highlights what happens when they remove their uniforms and face the emotional challenges that come with their profession. Actor Enrico Colantoni, who portrayed Sgt. Greg Parker on the series Flashpoint, guides us through this compelling journey.

Through the stories of their families, spouses, co-workers, and the responders themselves, the documentary showcases the emotional toll first responders often carry, a side of them rarely seen by the public.

Support First Responders and PTSD Awareness – 2017

Support First Responders and PTSD Awareness at the 13th Annual Spotlight on Research Breakfast

Every day, first responders risk their lives to help others in need, but the emotional toll they face is immense. Around 20% of all first responders experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during their careers. PTSD can result from reliving traumatic situations long after the danger has passed, and first responders often neglect their own mental health while caring for others.

Join us for the 13th Annual Spotlight on Research Breakfast, hosted by the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and the University of Alberta. This year’s keynote speaker is Col. Rakesh Jetly, OMM, CD, MD, FRCP(C), Senior Psychiatrist for the Canadian Armed Forces and Mental Health Clinical Advisor to the Canadian Forces Surgeon General. He will focus on understanding the mental health lessons learned from the military, with the topic: “A Century After the Great War: Mental Health Lessons Learned by the Canadian Armed Forces.”

The event highlights innovation in PTSD research and rehabilitation for first responders. Following the breakfast, there will be an interactive poster symposium and a “master class” session, allowing local experts to collaborate on regional PTSD impacts and action steps.
