Together, we can prevent suicide. The vast majority of people who attempt suicide and receive a caring intervention do not re-attempt. This class teaches you how to skillfully respond to people considering suicide.
Attending this two-day course will train you to intervene with an individual who is thinking about suicide.
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop—anyone 18 or older can learn and use the ASIST model.
Focusing upon the role of ASIST caregivers in a suicide-safer community, the goal of ASIST is to train caregivers who are willing, ready and able to provide life-assisting, suicide first aid. Studies show that the ASIST method helps reduce suicidal feelings and is a cost-effective way to help address the problem of suicide.
All participants who complete the course (14 hours of instruction time) will receive a certificate of participation.
ASIST is recognized by Canadian Accreditation Council Of Human Services (CACOHS) and the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). Participants who have current ASIST certificate can obtain 14 hours of Category A professional development credits. If you do not belong to ASWB, please check with your professional association to see if you qualify for credits.
“I’ve been to 5 coworkers funerals due to suicide, plus many others that I didn’t personally know.  If all first responders had this course along with it’s practical teaching on resilience, those numbers would be a lot less.  This course allowed me to be confident in understanding the bigger picture as I see others struggle.  It gave me tools to also save my own life.  Thank you Legacy Place Society”…JK
FIRST RESPONDERS SUICIDE AWARENESS CONFERENCES

FIRST RESPONDERS SUICIDE AWARENESS CONFERENCES

First Responders Suicide Awareness Conferences

A shared opportunity for all from police, fire, EMS, 9-1-1, military, corrections, peace officers, sheriffs, fish and wildlife officers, commercial vehicle enforcement, animal and bylaw officers, security personnel, and front line medical workers and their families to come together in one place to remember the people we have lost to suicide, recognize many today are still suffering in silence, and identify what we can do as a collective to build resiliency and healthy workplaces through awareness and education.

First Responders and Military Personnel are key stakeholders for our safe and healthy communities, and often fail to recognize they too also require support and care to ensure their health for a long career as well as life after their service.

Please join us this year to learn more about the topic of suicide, the most common concerns around mental health and addictions, how to build resiliency in today’s fast-paced world and be a part of the network that is promoting understanding and compassion to reduce stigma and foster hope.

Legacy Place seeks accredited education partnerships that contribute to building resiliency as an individual and/or as a family.  This includes increasing knowledge, reduce stigma and enable networking by organizing and facilitating mental wellness and suicide awareness workshops/conferences and family camp.

Our Programs Offer…

Connection – Our courses are delivered by specially trained psychologists and counsellors and include direct peer support from veteran paraprofessionals who have graduated from previous programs.

Communication – The directness of military language often doesn’t translate well to the civilian world, whether at home or at work.  We cover how to bridge this gap in communication:  building the skills to improve the relationships important to you and to be understood the way that you want to be.

Self-Maintenance – The effects of operational stress can impact our lives long after leaving the service, sometimes to the extent that life can’t be enjoyed or lived the way we want.  Our course explains why this occurs and how to begin regulating again.  By the end you’ll leave knowing how to access resources to continue improving, whether those are peer or professional.

Future Planning – Many aspects of ‘getting out’ can pose challenges you weren’t expecting – your differences in responsibility, day-to-day routine, financial situation to name a few.  Over the course of the program, we will explore in depth what made your service rewarding and build concrete plans to find that personal meaning again.

Families Matter Research Webinar May 25, 2023 What I Wish I Had Known: Reflections On Family Life After PSP Service

Families Matter Research Group Interactive Series: What I wish I had known – Reflections on family life after PSP service
Leaving the public safety sector is a major life transition that impacts both the public safety personnel (PSP) and their families. There is growing awareness of the benefits of preparation and planning for this transition and the impacts it has on identity, mental health, routines, relationships and social connections.
Through a moderated panel discussion, Dr. Christina Harrington, PhD, RSW; Laura Kloosterman, Executive Director of Badge of Life Canada and Retired OPP Constable with 32 years of service; Dean Wilkinson, Retired Paramedic with 47 years of service; and Bill Turner, Retired Police Sergeant and Business Owner, Peer Supporter and Advocate, will share their reflections and strategies for navigating the impacts of life after service with their families.
While this is an open event and all are welcome, please note, registration is required. Information gathered from this event will play a vital role in growing a network that will serve and support PSP families across Canada. Following the event, attendees will be asked to complete a survey to inform the format, frequency, and themes of future PSP Families Network activities.
We would like to acknowledge the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Development Grant (Families Matter: A partnership of partners to study, serve, and support the families of military, veterans, and public safety personnel) with partners the Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research and Treatment (CIPSRT), the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR), and the Vanier Institute of the Family, along with Medavie Foundation.  Follow link to register for the May 25, 2023 webinar.

SAVE THE DATE!  More details to follow but in the meantime, learn a bit about our Key Note Speaker: JAY DOBYNS

My presentation is designed to be well-rounded related the message to new officers/agents, veterans of the trade, traditional investigators to unit specialists, and supervisors/management. My presentation is not a glory days, I-love-me show.  I discuss my mistakes and failures equally with achievement, hoping to help the audience avoid my errors and capitalize on my successes. I am a New York Times bestselling author with two books, No Angel – My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels, and, Catching Hell – A True Story of Abandonment and Betrayal.  I have been featured in over a dozen television and film programs related to my undercover career.  No Angel is presently being adapted to a feature film.

I will overwhelm your audience with a unique, one-of-a-kind presentation.  I guarantee that no one will be checking their cell phone during my presentation: college football All-American, shot through the chest after four days on the job as a federal agent, returning to participate in over 500 undercover operations including the first and only long-term undercover infiltration of the Hells Angels gang, and overcoming post-op death and violence threats (my home was destroyed by criminal arsonists after receiving a series credible threats).
