Join the Lethbridge Firefighters Charitable Association on Sunday, September 24, 2023, for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in support of Legacy Place Society and A New Dawn Foundation. This annual event honors the memory of first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 9/11 attacks while raising funds for organizations dedicated to supporting first responders, military personnel, and their families.

Event Overview

Participants will climb the equivalent of 110 stories, symbolizing the heroic journey made by rescuers on 9/11. Whether you complete the challenge in 30 minutes or two hours, this is a time to reflect, honor, and show gratitude for those who gave their lives in service.

Participant Guidelines

1. Warm Up & Hydrate: Arrive prepared for a challenging but rewarding climb.
2. Stay Safe: Follow the designated routes (one stairwell for ascent, one for descent).
3. Teamwork Encouraged: While the climb is an individual task, we promote supporting each other along the way.
4. Registration & Waivers: All participants must sign a waiver. Pick up your package at Lethbridge Supplements and Vitamins on Friday, September 22nd, 12:00–6:00 PM, or check in at the event if unable to attend package pick-up.

As many families are forced to relocate, first responders, including firefighters, paramedics, and police officers, are risking their lives to protect communities from the flames. The loss of personal belongings and the devastation to homes are just a few of the ongoing hardships that people are facing.

Legacy Place Society is a registered charity dedicated to providing critical support to first responders, veterans, and military personnel and their families during times of crisis. As these wildfires continue to ravage various regions, Legacy Place is committed to offering relief and resources to affected communities.

Legacy Place Society is hosting an ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) workshop in Edmonton on September 25 & 26, 2023, at the Italian Culture Centre. This suicide intervention training is fully funded (valued at $250) for members of the Legacy Place Family, including those in Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Services, 911 Dispatch, Veterans, and Military Personnel. Why ASIST Suicide Intervention Training Matters

The ASIST workshop is a two-day suicide prevention course that teaches participants how to skillfully intervene with individuals at risk of suicide. By learning the ASIST model, you can support individuals in crisis and help create a suicide-safer community. The program is based on research showing that suicide first aid significantly reduces suicidal feelings.

What You Will Learn in the ASIST Workshop

During this interactive ASIST workshop, participants will learn how to:

• Recognize signs of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
• Apply the suicide first aid model to intervene effectively.
• Develop a safety plan to ensure immediate protection for individuals at risk.
• Be trained as caregivers ready to assist individuals in crisis.

This training is ideal for anyone working in high-stress environments, such as first responders, military personnel, and veterans and It equips participants with the suicide intervention skills necessary to help others and make a real difference.

• Certification: All participants will receive a certificate of participation upon completion.

ASIST is recognized by the Canadian Accreditation Council of Human Services (CACOHS) and the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). Participants who are certified can receive 14 hours of professional development credits. Check with your association to confirm eligibility for credits.

Founded in 2017, the Edmonton First Responders Rodeo Association was established by a group of Fire, EMS, and Police personnel, along with trusted advisors, all with a shared interest in creating a friendly rodeo competition. About the NAM Knights of Canada

In the summer of 1989, a small group of Harley-riding combat veterans from the Vietnam War, who were also police officers, formed the Nam Knights Motorcycle Club. The club was founded in New Jersey by Jack Quigley, who is now the retired Undersheriff of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department. Jack, who served as a platoon sergeant with the 11th Motor Transport Battalion, First Marine Division, started the club with the vision of building a community of brotherhood and supporting veterans in need.

Today, the Nam Knights of America Motorcycle Club has grown to 78 chapters across 18 states, Washington D.C., and Alberta, Canada. The club includes veterans from all wars, law enforcement personnel, and dedicated patriots. Notably, the Nam Knights continue to honor the memory of fallen veterans and police officers while helping those who are unable to physically or financially help themselves.

The club’s mission is to:

• Honor the memory of American Veterans and Police Officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
• Assist veterans and police officers during their time of need.
• Promote community awareness through sponsorship and fundraising events.

As Jack Quigley has said: “The club was formed to recapture the brotherhood its founding members shared while serving in Southeast Asia, and to help other veterans of all wars who are unable to physically or financially help themselves.”

In Memory of Blair Michael Phillip James (August 11, 1982 – May 18, 2020)

A Message from the James Family:

Blair was a remarkable man known for his dry sense of humor, brilliant mind, and tender heart. He was passionate about the outdoors, enjoying activities such as camping, bonfires, motocross, quads, and sledding. He was a loving husband to Chantel and a devoted father to his young children, Zoey (6) and Ryker (3) at the time of his passing.

This golf tournament began as a memorial to Blair, to support his family, and to honor his memory. While it will always remain a tribute to Blair, our mission is to raise awareness of mental health, combat the stigma surrounding suicide, and support those in need of critical services.

Supporting First Responders and Mental Health

This year, we are proud to focus on supporting First Responders and mental health initiatives in our community. Talking about mental health struggles and suicide can be difficult, but it is essential to break the silence. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help. Brain fog is a common but often overlooked symptom in veterans, particularly those experiencing chronic pain. This condition affects cognitive function, including memory, focus, and decision-making. The ongoing research at McMaster University, led by Ronessa Dass and Dr. Tara Packham, aims to understand how brain fog impacts veterans’ mental health and daily lives. Supported by the Chronic Pain Centre of Excellence for Canadian Veterans, the study strives to identify effective strategies to help veterans manage cognitive challenges.

Why Study Brain Fog in Veterans?

Veterans face a unique set of challenges related to cognitive function, often exacerbated by chronic pain or trauma. Understanding the effects of brain fog can improve the way veterans are treated, particularly when it comes to mental health support. By focusing on cognitive function and daily coping strategies, the research team aims to develop solutions that help veterans lead fulfilling, manageable lives despite their cognitive struggles.

How Veterans Can Participate in the Study

If you are a veteran experiencing brain fog, your participation in this study could provide valuable insights. You will participate in a Zoom discussion with other veterans, sharing your experiences and discussing how brain fog impacts your daily life. Participants will also complete questionnaires about their pain, routines, and overall well-being. This research not only contributes to broader knowledge but also provides an opportunity for veterans to connect and support one another.

Study Details: What to Expect

The study will take about two hours, including a group discussion and completing questionnaires. The study spans six months, with 40 veterans participating. Researchers expect to share the results within a year. This is a unique opportunity to help shape future treatment for brain fog in veterans.

Confidentiality and Privacy Protection

The research team is committed to protecting your privacy. Any audio or video recordings from the sessions will only be used for transcription and will be destroyed once the analysis is complete. Results will be shared anonymously, using pseudonyms to ensure confidentiality.

Compensation for Participation

Veterans who participate will receive a $25 compensation for their time. If you choose to withdraw early, compensation will be adjusted based on your participation time.

The Veterans Transition Network (VTN) offers comprehensive programs designed to support veterans transitioning to civilian life. The Men’s Transition Skills Course is starting on June 16—with just one spot remaining—one hour west of Red Deer. If you’re a veteran looking for support, this is a fantastic opportunity to join the waitlist. Our next round of courses will begin in September, so make sure to secure your place!

We are also offering a program for female veterans in BC, with all travel and accommodation expenses covered. This initiative allows women veterans to receive the support they need to successfully transition to civilian life.
