Alberta Breweries Release “First Call” Beer to Support First Responders
Following the success of its 2021 launch, Alberta breweries are teaming up once again in 2023 to release a special beer, “First Call”, in support of first responders across the province. This collaborative effort brings together Campio Brewing, Last Best Brewing Distilling, Jasper Brewing, Banff Ave Brewing, Canada Malting, Country Mault, Precision Labelling, and Last Spike Brewing.
“First Call” – A Tribute to Front-Line Heroes
The “First Call” beer was inspired by the hardships faced by first responders during the pandemic, especially healthcare workers and first responders who were on the front lines of the crisis.
Shaun Caron, the general manager of Campio Brewing in Edmonton, explained the concept behind the beer:
“Throughout the pandemic, a lot of industries and groups faced challenges. First responders likely had one of the hardest times. As a brewing company, we thought making a really good beer would be a fitting tribute to their service. The name ‘First Call’ symbolizes the first call made during the worst day of your life – a call to the front-line workers who are always there to help.”
A Refreshing IPA for a Great Cause
Described as an “approachable IPA,” First Call features refreshing flavors of grapefruit, tangerine, and lime. It’s available on draft and in four-packs at participating breweries and liquor stores across Canada.
For each draft and four-pack sold, $1 will be donated to charities that support first responders. One of the chosen charities is Legacy Place Society, which supports the families and individuals of law enforcement, emergency medical/fire services, 911 dispatchers, veterans, and military personnel.
Supporting First Responders Through Legacy Place Society
Legacy Place Society plays a critical role in supporting first responders by offering a range of services, including:
- Confidential phone support connecting individuals to professional and peer support groups.
- Transitional housing providing safe and confidential spaces for first responders to heal from a range of challenges.
- Mental wellness and suicide awareness workshops, helping reduce stigma and promote positive mental health.
Where to Find “First Call” Beer
You can enjoy First Call beer at participating brew pubs and in cans at select liquor stores across Canada. By enjoying this refreshing IPA, you’re not just supporting local brewers – you’re also supporting those who risk their lives to help us.

Legacy Gifts: Ensuring a Strong Future
Legacy gifts play a vital role in sustaining the mission of Legacy Place Society for years to come. By including Legacy Place Society in your estate planning, you contribute to ongoing support for first responders, veterans, and their families.
Here are some impactful ways to leave a legacy gift:
1. Gift by Will (Bequest)
A charitable bequest is the simplest and most common planned gift. You can leave:
- A specific asset
- A fixed sum of money
- A percentage of your estate
Benefits:
- Reduce estate taxes significantly.
- Your estate may claim gifts equal to 100% of net income in the year of death and the preceding year.
2. Gift of Securities
Donating publicly traded securities (stocks and mutual funds) eliminates federal capital gains tax, allowing you to maximize your donation and tax benefits.
How to Donate:
- Visit our CanadaHelps page.
- Complete the details of your pledge online.
- Submit a Letter of Authorization to your financial advisor.
CanadaHelps will send you a tax receipt and ensure your donation reaches Legacy Place Society.
3. Gift of RRSPs and RRIFs
Your retirement funds (RRSPs and RRIFs) are heavily taxed, but naming Legacy Place Society as a direct beneficiary offsets taxes and ensures your funds are put to good use.
How it Works:
- Designate Legacy Place Society as a beneficiary on your retirement account.
- Upon passing, your gift is treated as a charitable donation, and a tax receipt is issued for the full amount.
4. Gift of Life Insurance
Life insurance can be a powerful way to make a lasting impact. Options include:
- Donating a paid-up policy.
- Transferring ownership of an active policy to Legacy Place Society and receiving tax receipts for premiums paid.
- Naming Legacy Place Society as the beneficiary of a new or existing policy.
5. Endowments
Endowments are permanent investments where annual income supports education, training, or capital funding for Legacy Place Society.
Requirements:
- Minimum $10,000 contribution over five years.
- Name the endowment after yourself or a loved one to create a personal legacy.
Create a Lasting Impact
Whether through a benevolence initiative or a legacy gift, your support ensures that Legacy Place Society continues to provide vital services, including transitional housing, mental health support, and educational initiatives for first responders and their families.
